What to Expect at Your Child's First Children's Theatre Class

Every year, we watch the same beautiful thing happen at CTC: a nervous kid walks in gripping a parent's hand, and twenty minutes later they're belly-laughing through a warm-up game with a group of brand-new friends. If your child's first class is coming up — or you're still deciding — here's exactly what to expect, so you both can walk in feeling ready.

Before Class: You Don't Need to Prepare Much

Truly. No lines to memorize, no costume required, no "talent" to prove. Comfortable clothes and shoes they can move in are really all we ask. If your child is nervous, the best thing you can say on the drive over is simply: "You don't have to perform today. You just have to show up."

The First 10 Minutes: Warm-Ups, Not Auditions

Class always opens with games, not performance. Think name games, silly movement, group circles — the kind of thing that gets even the shyest kid giggling before they've had time to feel self-conscious. This isn't filler; it's intentional. Warm-ups are where Community and Concentration — two of our Five C's — start building from minute one.

What They're Actually Learning (Even If It Looks Like Play)

Every activity in a CTC class is quietly doing double duty. A group storytelling game is teaching Communication. A movement sequence is teaching Coordination. An ensemble scene is teaching kids to hold focus as a team — Concentration and Community together. And every time a kid tries something a little scary in a room that won't let them fail — that's Confidence, built one small brave moment at a time.

Parents often ask when their child will "perform." The honest answer: performance grows out of confidence, not the other way around. We're not rushing anyone onto a stage before they're ready to be there joyfully.

What to Bring

• Comfortable clothes and shoes (nothing that restricts movement)

• A water bottle

• An open mind — that's really it

What Happens If They're Shy or Reluctant at First

This is normal, and our teachers are trained for exactly this moment. Nobody is put on the spot. Kids are invited in gradually — watching, then joining a group activity, then finding their own voice at their own pace. Most of the "reluctant" kids in week one are the ones cartwheeling into class by week three.
